Advancements in Computer Technology

With technology progressing as fast as it is at the present, it is a wonder we do not have a new mass-marketed gadget appearing every few minutes. Personal computers, once predicted to be owned by a mere handful of individuals, are everywhere nowadays. If you are a student a personal computer is virtually a necessity. Accompanying the ever-increasing popularity of the personal computer is a plethora of gadgets and technological advancements. Though it may not be every few minutes, it seems as though every couple of months we hear about a computer with more storage space or a new device that one can connect to their computer.

Some devices that appear on the market are either completely superfluous or not so accessible to the entirety of the population, whether it is because of their cost or their limited supply. The costly devices are reserved to those who can afford them, until some new gadget replaces them and the price of these machines decreases, much like any new technology that appears on the market. Those gadgets, which are unnecessary, are not overly practical and the market for these creations is comprised mainly of those with an affinity for such devices. Inventions like webcams, while they are certainly fun to play with, are essentially unnecessary as they have no bearing on the actual operation of the computer and are used largely for leisure computer activities.

Computer

The more purposeful advancements in computer technology revolve around those, which increase the computers ability to manage certain tasks and those, which increase the storage space of the computer. Many personal computer owners find themselves craving more space to store songs or various other files and often wishing that their computer were faster. Though many computers produced today have a excessive storage space, that is, it is nearly impossible to fill a personal computer to capacity, these types of advancements permit a much speedier and more efficient functioning computer.

Computer Phobias

Years ago around the end of January I would develop Chinophobia (fear of snow). Maybe it was because we had 3-5 feet of snow and I was ready for spring. Over the years I have developed "temporary phobias" for a number of good reasons.

A phobia is a handy way to get myself out of unpleasant situations. I developed Dentophobia (fear of the dentist) when my wisdom teeth decided to come in, but it was cured when the pain became so unbearable that I set out for the dentist office for some relief. Phobias also provide good excuses for why I do some of the silly things I seem to do, such as, when computers were first introduced to our school.

Computer

When computers were first introduced to our school I developed instant Cyberphobia (fear of computers or working on them). As the years passed I lost this phobia, but I noticed that there are many phobias associated with computers. In other words if you have any of the following phobias I would not be even near a computer.

Computer Phobias

Neophobia (fear of anything new)--computers change daily, oops, hourly so you need to avoid them.

Monophobia (fear of being alone)--since working on a computer is not group work you should avoid a computer.

Ballistophobia (fear of bullets)--You can get near a computer and even work on one, but avoid that bullet button at all costs.

Tropophobia (fear of making changes)--don't even be in the vicinity of a computer because this is a continual procedure and if you don't change your computer system often you quickly revert to the caveman era of computer technology.

Atychiphobia (fear of failure) - better not chance using a computer because the power may fail, the lights may flicker and then your system fails and you have to start all over. Besides that, one misplaced finger can make you wonder, "What happened now?"

Ankylophobia (fear of joint immobility) try sitting at a computer all day and then get up, it's close to impossible at my age so avoid the computer.

Kaniophobia (fear of anything new or novel) with a computer it's always changing and you may not be warned about those changes, so don't chance it.

Allodoxaphobia (fear of opinions)--you can get on the computer, but avoid chat rooms and articles, like this, at all costs.

Castisophobia (fear of sitting)--self explanatory, just avoid the computer. Tachophobia (fear of speed)--avoid computers only if they have high speed internet and it was built last year, other wise, it is okay.

Polyphobia (fear of many things)--Everything connected to the computer is numbered in the many things category. Many functions, many buttons, many sights and especially many wires. Technophobia (fear of technology) That's what computers are all about, technology, so avoid.

May you find your life free of any phobias and typing peacefully on your computer. Have a good life.

Beeps - Computer

When you turn on your PC or laptop the system will run a test called a power on self test. Before Windows even begins to load a signal is sent to various components on the mother board. The POST will check components such as RAM, keyboard, video controller, CPU, the system clock and main board. If any of these components are missing or faulty the test will send out a beep code through the system speaker alerting of a problem. Sometimes the error will also be displayed on the screen for quick diagnosis. If everything is OK the pc will normally make a short beep and begin to load the operating system.

Most POST tests use a similar type of beeping code, I have listed here the most common for PCS and laptops. For general PCS:

Computer

· 1 beep code -memory failure -Reseat /replace RAM

Beeps - Computer

· 2 beeps -memory failure -Reseat /replace RAM

· 3 beeps -memory failure first 64 KB -Reseat /replace RAM

· 4 beeps -the system timer -system battery or main board

· 4-7 beeps -system board/CPU -Replace main board/CPU

· 8 beeps Video memory Replace video card/main board

From my experience reseating ram does very often fix the problem. Also reseating other components if further troubleshooting is required can also do the trick. To isolate a problem you can disconnect hardware such as the hard drive, CD ROM drive floppy drive. Each manufacturer has a detailed list of beeps computer codes.

If your PC or laptop is not giving you a beep message and will not boot I have listed a comprehensive list of links for more troubleshooting solutions at my website.

Computer - Very Slow Startup?

This article is going to give you some advice on speeding up your slow computer! A few tips and tricks I have learned working as a computer technician. If your computer is very slow at startup then there are a few main things you need to look at. I will list them here and go into detail on each one.

- Startup Items
- Viruses
- Registry
- Temporary files (cookies etc.)

Computer

Startup Items

Computer - Very Slow Startup?

One of the main things that could be causing your computer to be loading slow at startup will be all the programs that are set to load, if you have 30 programs that all need to load when you first enter Windows then you can see why it is taking an age. To combat this you can either go into msconfig and untick all the programs you don't need at startup.. or you can download a program called StartUpLite which gives you a list of all un needed programs at startup, from there you can tell it what to prevent from loading.

Viruses

If you have any viruses or spyware on your computer then this can also delay startup times. Run a full virus/spyware scan through to ensure your computer is clean from any infections. If you don't already have a scanner, I would suggest you run through a program called Malwarebytes and get a constant anti virus such as Avira or Avast (All can be found on Google).

Registry

Slow startup can be aided by a bad/corrupt/overloaded registry. Try running through a registry cleaner such as CCleaner.

Temporary Files

These are all the files that aren't needed on your computer. These files get onto your computer when you are viewing a web page. To clean these you might want to try giving your computer a full cleanup by using a program such as Cleanup or CCleaner. I hope some of this information helps to speed up your computer. Even if you manage to get your computer to the speed you want it I would suggest you to do a full virus scan of your computer, clean the registry and get rid of any unnecessary files on a regular basis. To see a selection of other useful downloads and get links for the ones mentioned have a look at the link below.

Computer Evolution

A computer is a machine that is able to store process and retrieve data to perform some function. The first ones to think about computing are the Muslims When they invented algorithms (Named after the Muslim Scholar "Alkhawarizimy") and that was in the 1200's. Algorithms are mathematical processes and steps to solve problems.

Early in the 1600's the Europeans developed mechanical calculators that aimed to solve simple mathematical problems such as addition. It was "Blaise Pascal" who invented the first commercial calculator that was a machine powered by hand that was only able to perform addition. "Gottfried Liebnitz" in the 1670's tried to manufacture multiplying machines but the first successful multiplying machines appeared in Germany just before the American war.

Computer

In 1801, "Joseph-Marie Jacquard" from France builds a loom that weaves after reading punch cards full of holes made out of wood. The cards of holes are used in the machines to define the pattern that the machine weaves by. This is typical data retrieval and processing. This machine was powered by water and it was 149 years before the invention of a real modern link computing machine.

Computer Evolution

Charles Babbage began looking for a programmable machine just after the first mass-produced calculator on 1820. Babbage was a poor man and a book-keeper but he managed to finish his machine on 1842 and "Ada Lovelace" used his machine to translate a short written work. She is known to be the first programmer ever in history. On 1854 "George Boole" a professor of Mathematics writes the "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought" and he becomes the recognized father of computer science.

On 1890 the census was tabulated on punch cards as the ones that were used before by "Joseph-Marie Jacquard" to make weaves. The system used electric power for the first time in history of computers and was made by "Herman Hollerith" from MIT.

In 1892 "William Burroughs" who was an ex-teller makes the first commercially successful printing calculator. The first one was hand power but then he developed the electrical one.

"Konrad Zuse" a German construction engineer on 1935 builds a new mechanical machine to perform the calculations required in his construction work. After it was finished he starts on creating a programmable calculating machine that was finished on 1938.

"John Vincent Atanasoff" in 1936 starts working on creating the first digital computer in the physics lab's basement with the assistance of "Clifford Berry". The machine was called the "ABC" machine and it introduced some of the modern features of computers such as electric calculation. The machine was later destroyed by the students in the school because the school administration was not impressed with the results.

The German makes the Enigma which was a very complex machine they thought it was unbreakable for encoding messages during the world war. Several people were involve in solving the problem of decoding enigma including the most notable "Alan Turing".

The enigma code was broken and this made the war shorter after the messages of the German were exposed.

Computer Safeguard

Here is what you can do to protect yourself.

Internet and computer safeguards:

Computer

Before you shop online, install and Update spyware and virus protection utilities to prevent a worm, virus or spyware program from sending out files or other stored information from your computer. But if you understand what spyware means and take the necessary steps to detect, remove and prevent it you can be free from this headache before it turns chronic. These are just a few of the ways that you can continue to monitor your computer in the attempt to prevent spyware from being installed.

Computer Safeguard

A Firewall is very effective at stopping spyware installation and even if it does manage to become installed (because of an user action) you will be able to prevent the Spyware from communicating with it's creators on the Internet. 5- Spyware Guard- A product of Javacool Software which performs scans immediately to block and catch spyware, protects against browser-hijackers from installing spyware to your computer. To help prevent malware from writing to the Registry, get a custom HOSTS file, to block requests that the spyware be downloaded and installed again.

Here are a few things that you may want to keep checking on your computer in order to prevent spyware. Thankfully anti-spyware/adware programs such as Ad-Aware (free) and WebRoot's own offering, Spy Sweeper can clean up a PC and even help prevent further infections, but just like anti-virus software, this software needs to be kept up-to-date to remain effective. Most people don't even know that they have spyware on their computer let alone how to remove it and prevent an outbreak from ever happening again.

The information will go as far as pointing out where the spyware is located in the computer, gamble quotient and the vital actions desired to prevent such threats. Computer security bundles with advanced algorithm and heuristic capabilities; MD5 hashes; immunization solutions; all of these have stepped up to the front lines of internet security to prevent adware, spyware or malware from compromising systems.

How To Fix Your Computer Freezing

We have all been there: sitting at the computer, and typing up a report, or letter to someone. When all of a sudden, nothing! Mouse won't move, keyboard won't type, and yelling at the computer does not help either. And, oh yeah, you forgot to save this file when you started. So all of this hard work is gone, erased, and must be redone. This is very frustrating. This one small tip will show you how to fix your computer freezing.

The cause of the freezing, or locking up, of your computer, is due to some either corrupted or missing files. And more specifically, missing or corrupted registry files. These are the files which tell everything on your how it is suppose to work. Basically, they are configuration files. And if these files get corrupted, or messed up, it can wreck havoc.

Computer

Sometimes the registry files end up missing. This can happen when you uninstall software from your computer. The software being uninstalled may remove registry files also associated with another program. There should be a message asking you whether or not you want to delete the files as they are associated with another program. Your best bet is to say NO to this and leave the files. If the files end up missing, then the program which needs them will stall, hang, or freeze the next time it tries to run. But there is a simple way to fix this.

How To Fix Your Computer Freezing

By just running registry scan software on your computer, you can find these problems and fix them right away. It will let you know which files are bad, and will fix them to its original state. And it is this simple step which will show you how to fix your computer freezing.

What Are the Main Components of a Computer System?

We all know that computers are complex devices, machines made out of an amalgam of electronic parts and components. But which computer components are essential for a computer to run? Modern PCs can still function fully without Bluetooth or a floppy disk drive. Here is a list of computer components that a computer system cannot do without.

* Motherboard

Computer

The motherboard is a very basic unit in any computer system. This is the computer component to which all other internal computer components are attached. It links all the other main components of a computer system together. Consequently, motherboards are sometimes referred to as the "heart" of a computer system.

What Are the Main Components of a Computer System?

* CPU

The central processing unit or CPU is the computer component responsible for running programs and applications on the computer. Without a CPU in your computer, you will not be able to do any tasks -- you cannot boot to an operating system, you cannot play music, videos and games, and you cannot do any word processing. For a computer to function, it has to have a CPU.

* RAM

Random Access Memory or RAM is another vital computer component. It is the storage media where a computer temporarily stores files and information that it can pull at random when running programs and applications. Together with the CPU, RAM determines the computer's speed. A computer with a large RAM and a mediocre CPU can actually run faster than a computer with a powerful CPU but low RAM.

* HDD

As opposed to the RAM, the hard disk drive or HDD stores computer files and data long-term. Even without power, the hard drive still retains the files stored inside it. The hard drive can store important system files like the operating system, program files and other data. It can also be used to store mp3s and videos. If the computer runs out of RAM, it will temporarily use the hard drive as a virtual memory bank.

* Video Card

A video card allows a computer to display images on the computer monitor. It helps speed up the rendering of images onscreen and contributes to clearer and detailed pictures. PC gamers and multimedia software users will find a high-end dedicated graphics card helpful in running graphics-intensive programs smoothly.

* PSU

The power supply unit or PSU supplies all computer components with power. It converts the high voltages from an AC power outlet to lower voltages that are safe for internal computer components. Without a PSU, a computer and its components will not be able to power up.

A computer can also benefit from an optical drive to read and play CDs and DVDs, a network card and router for connecting to the Internet, and peripheral devices such as printers and scanners. The motherboard, CPU, RAM, HDD, video card and PSU are, however, the main components that make up a computer system.

Where Do Computer Viruses Come From?

Computer viruses become a threat for most computer users. But have you ever asked yourself "where do computer viruses come from"? Perhaps with this knowledge you will be able to enjoy all the benefits of your PC without becoming a virus victim.

Behind every virus is a computer programmer. They create viruses for a variety of reasons. It may be to demonstrate skill. It may be eager students seeking admiration from their fellows. But more often than not viruses are created by cyber-criminals. They are designed to steal or copy your personal data for financial gain. It may be to gain access to passwords or credit card details. It may be to use your internet connection without your knowledge for illegal purposes. Or it may just be to bombard you with spam and bogus advertisements.

Computer

So viruses can be simply annoying or they can lead to financial ruin. Either way they are something we all need to steer clear of and we can do that by knowing a little more about them.

Where Do Computer Viruses Come From?

The most common source of virus infection is of course the Internet, this will not be a surprise and it doesn't mean that you have to stop accessing the Internet either. Most of the people who do unknowingly catch viruses from the net do so because they are click-happy. By this I mean they will click around and download anything on offer without knowing whether or not they can trust the source.

Here's a simple tip: Before you click on a link, check your status bar (usually bottom left) and see where it points to. Also make sure you don't install any programs unless you are confident you know what they are and where they have come from.

Email and email attachments are the second most common tool used to spread computer viruses. Email attachments must be handled with a lot of caution and you must not open any attachments that come with an email from an unknown sender. If you have a good anti virus package then you will be able to scan attachments before you view them. Make sure you do this even if it's from a friend. They may have unknowingly forwarded a virus to you.

Another very common way in which the virus spreads is as part of a bundle with cracks and key generators. Generally these are offered on peer-to-peer networks that have illegal file-sharing programs. The victim would be lured with downloads for free software only to find they were installing a virus on their own system.

The main thing is not just having a good antivirus on your computer, it is to keep it up to date because new viruses are created all the time. Again, a good anti virus suit will update itself regularly.

Hopefully this has answered that burning question "where do computer viruses come from"? Just good anti virus software and a bit of common computer sense is all you really need to stay safe from computer viruses.

Advancement in Computer Technology

5 years ago we gathered around and marveled at the little specs moving at our commands, doing not much - except moving off course, we called these things games. Today the hardware in computers and other devices has changed significantly; we went from having a "spacious" 1mb hard drive to 250 GB of space. The graphics have also taken a giant leap for our computers, no longer are we confined to little dots but our 256mb graphic cards allow us to explore a virtual world in 3d. The sound has also changed from 4bit to 32 and pretty soon 64bit; we went from beeps to actually words. Finally the speed of our beloved computers has also increased from mere kilobytes to gigabytes of rams.

In such a short period of time we went from what we used to call "advanced" technology to today's much superior devices. So if you guys are like I am, there is one question that strikes our mind, what's next? Well I would love to say that we will be able to put on our virtual glasses that will allow us to explore the virtual world as if we were in it, but this is not likely, sorry guys; however, these sorts of glasses are being constructed but its unlikely they will come out any time soon. What we can expect to see is an improvement in our Text-to-speech and vise versa programs after the 64bit sound card is released allowing the computer to understand our voices much clearly, also we should soon be seeing more "dept" in our computer as you may know that the most our computers can run on 32bit resolution, it is expected that Microsoft is like to bring out a 64bit resolution with there next version of windows. Also the speed and graphics are to increase a lot more, already some games look as they are almost real, and soon they will look real.

Computer

I am not certain exactly what marvel the computer hardware's will hold in the future, but one thing is certain it will be something to forward too, and once again the next generation will be mocking the so called advanced technology we have today.

Basic Computer Features 101

When buying a desktop computer one of the first things to look at will be its use and individual budget. For example, a machine that will be primarily used for gaming should focus on lots of memory, a powerful processor, enhanced video and graphics, while a computer that will be used for Internet browsing and simple word processing will not need nearly as much frills. This computer-buying guide covers the basics to give you some idea of the important features to look at.

CPU

Computer

CPU stands for central processing unit and is the brains of the computer. It is where most of the actual computing takes place and the quality of the processor will greatly determine the performance of the computer. The processor speed is measured in GHz.

Basic Computer Features 101

There are budget processors, mid grade and high-end processors. The high end ones maybe necessary for enhanced computer functions, such as gaming and entertainment, but overall the mid grade types are quite good and will deliver great performance for most any uses. Overall the two best brand names for processors are Intel and AMD.

RAM Memory

RAM memory is used to run programs on the computer and the more RAM you have the better the performance and speed of computing and to avoid slow downs and crashes. Gaming and entertainment need a lot more RAM than regular computer tasks for which 1GB is usually sufficient, but 2GB is really great. At least 3GB, is optimal for gaming and media experiences.

Also, it is a good idea to check and make sure that there are open memory upgrade slots so you can always add more memory as it is fairly cheap and easy to install.

Hard Drives

Hard drives are significant for the speed capacity of computers. Overall, the larger the drive the more storage space and the faster the computer. Optimal is 500GB.

Optical Drives - CD/DVD/Blu-ray

Most computers these days come with DVD/CD burners, and even if they do not they are cheap and easy to install and come in internal and external versions. Blu-ray is the latest option for burning in high definition format.

External Ports and Connections

Ports are used to attach peripherals, such as printers, Internet, iPods and others. Most important will be to have at least 5 USB ports, one FireWire port as well as an Ethernet connection for Internet and networking. Overall, the more ports you have the more variety and options will be available to add ons.

Monitors

A good monitor is essential for a quality computer experience. The older CRT models have become largely obsolete with the introduction of the LCD screen monitors, however many people still use them and they can still be found at online shopping sites. LCD screen monitors have a superior display with a reduced size due to the flat panel and their lower power consumption over the CRT models.

They come in a variety of sizes and sometimes the larger ones are a better value for the money and make the best experience for gaming, entertainment, such as video watching and are much easier on the eyes.

Basic Computer Features 101

How to Hook Up a Desktop Computer

Desktop computers are the trickiest type of computers to grace technology. However, compared to the technology before, setting this up is far easier. It is just like playing Lego, insert the parts fit.

It also helps that you have a manual with you. A desktop computer package comes with a manual and that will show pictures on how to set your computer up properly. You need only to follow the steps and you are good to go.

Computer

But to help you out further, here is a guide on the right way to set up your desktop:

How to Hook Up a Desktop Computer

Step 1: Know the different parts of the computer. The monitor, CPU (where every cable is attached), the mouse, keyboard and the AVR are the basics. If you have other devices such as printer or webcams and speaker, that will be a different topic.

Step 2: Place the Monitor on the center of your working space. Place the CPU beside it or below it, whatever floats your boat. You decide the arrangement. At the back of the monitor, there is a cable there with a blue rectangular end. Attach at the corresponding blue slot at the back of the CPU. Screw the edges carefully to make it more secure.

Step 3: Attach the power cable at the black slot found at the upper back of the CPU. This is the caved-in slot that looks like a pentagon.

Step 4: If you are using USB mouse and keyboard, they are usually the ones with rectangular ends), plug it in corresponding UBS slots usually at the lower portion of the back of the CPU. However, if they are circular, attach them to the corresponding circular colors at the upper portion of the CPU.

Step 5: If you already have internet access, you can plug the LAN cable to the slot close to the USB slots. This is slightly bigger as it has a clip at the bottom. Give it a little push until you hear it click.

Step 6: If you have a headset, you can plug the pink cord to the pink slot. This is the microphone. The green one is for the speaker.

Step 7: Attach one end of the power cord to the AVR. One end of your monitor should also be attached to the AVR. Plug the AVR to a power outlet. Open the AVR and then turn on the power switch of your computer to see if it is running smoothly.

Latest Computer Technology

Do you know what is inside your computer? Maybe you peeked when the service technician was installing something for you. When you first open up the CPU and look inside, a computer is a very threatening machine. But once you know about the different parts that make up a complete computer it gets a lot easier. Today's computers consist of around eight main components; some of the advanced computers might have a few more components. What are these eight main components and what are they used for? We will start with beginner level details to get you started.

First is the Power Supply. The power supply is used to provide electricity to all of the components in your computer. It is usually a rectangular box and is usually positioned in one of the corners of the computer. To find it for sure, look to see where the power cable plugs into the back of the computer and you have found the power supply. Most power supplies today are calculated in wattage and come in 50 watt increments (500 watt, 550, 600, etc

Computer

Second is the Motherboard. All of the components are connected into the motherboard; it doesn't mean that it is the brain of the computer. Yes it holds the brain and helps it act together with all the other components of the machine.

Latest Computer Technology

The third and a very important component of a computer is the CPU (Central Processing Unit), Known as the brain of the computer and nothing is going to happen without it. All major calculation performed by a computer are carried out inside its CPU. It is also responsible for activating and controlling the operations of other units of the system. The faster the CPU can do these calculations and give the correct answers, the faster the computer runs for the user. CPUs are now measured in gigahertz (Ghz) and they are at present up to our 3.8GHz or faster

A fourth component is the RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is used as momentary working storage for the computer. We have different types of RAM memory with different speed, but it should match with your motherboard so that it can work properly. The more RAM you have in your computer, the better your computer will work.

The fifth component is the Hard drive. This is where you can store everything. Our material on the hard drive includes the operating system (Windows XP, etc), games, and different types of software, etc. over the year the capacity of the hard drive is continuously improving and in the interval of few years its capacity have gone from around 20MB to over 500GB and more. So you can store a lot more information on your computer such as games, pictures, videos, applications, and more.

Sixth component is Cooling fans. Often most computers come with one cooling fan or it might have several. Its help to cool down the heat generated by others components, Such as power supply, the CPU, and some high-end video cards. The work of all of your cooling fans is to get this heat out of the case so that nothing overheats and breaks. While most of the noise you hear coming from a computer can be credited to the cooling fans, remember to be tolerant. The cooling fan is your friend!

Our Seventh and final component is the mixture of several different devices. These are the Cd-rom, DVD drives, floppy Drive and Backup devices such as external hard drive.

How to Transfer Software From One Computer to Another

If you are buying or replacing a personal computer, you may be wondering how you will be able to transfer all those expensive programs and games that you've been using on your old computer. Over time, computer users tend to accumulate a great deal of software from a variety of sources. You may have purchased your old computer already including software that you like, but unfortunately this software is not included with your new unit. Or you may have installed software from an online source or a disk that is no longer available. Whatever the reason, it is possible to transfer software from one computer to another. Here's how:

Using an external drive

Computer

One of the most obvious ways to transfer software from one computer to another is to copy the software from the old computer to an external hard drive or flash drive. Before doing so, you will want to make sure that the drive has enough capacity to hold the software files so that you don't lose any critical components when adding it to the new computer. You may want to use a web-based drive to store the programs as well for ease in accessing them to download them onto your new machine once this process is completed. This is the most time consuming of the methods.

How to Transfer Software From One Computer to Another

Drag and drop method

If you have the ability to link the hard drives of each of your computers via USB cables, then the easiest way to transfer software from one computer to another is by doing so, then dragging the original downloaded software files from one hard drive to another. Be advised that if you have ever removed a portion of the software from the original computer, you may not be able to do this correctly. It's best to get someone who's experienced with computers to handle this process for you, if at all possible, to avoid any problems. You also will need to allow your new computer to upload each software file and then re-install it to the new machine, which will take time.

Software transferring application

There are several software transferring applications available on the market, such as 'PC Mover' that can find then copy all the software files from your old machine, then re-install them onto your new computer. This software can be attained relatively inexpensively, less than the cost of taking your computer to an IT support person to do this task. Once you have the software copied, then you will also benefit from having a permanent backup of the software in case of a system crash.

If done carefully, you can easily transfer software from one computer to another by using one or more of the options mentioned above. Be sure to consult with a qualified computer technician if you experience any problems or need additional help.

Using Two Monitors on One Computer

You might ask why anyone would use two monitors on one computer but there are reasons.  Known as dual computer monitors, these have a number of benefits.  One good reason for using two monitors is for anyone in the photography business.  For example, individuals working on digital photos, trying to view, study, and arrange, using a second monitor is a great help.

With a dual computer screen, you can indeed double work and also desktop space.  One of the most common pc screens is the LCD.  These are aesthetically pleasing and they are very space sufficient.  Therefore, one who does not have a lot desk area would benefit from the LCD monitor.  Now, for people on a budget, a CRT monitor is also a good choice but larger.

Computer

When it comes to using a dual computer screen, again the best benefit is for anyone in photography or an individual who works with graphics and digital images.  Some of the main benefits include:

Using Two Monitors on One Computer

Browsing a photo library, putting all pictures on one screen in thumbnail view and then looking at the pictures on a full screen on the second monitor whereby the picture could be focused and manipulated.

Editing photographs is also much easier by using dual computer monitors.  For instance, one monitor can be used for browsing photographs on the internet or through some type of photo library and then with the second screen, photos can be edited using a special software program.

Even staying current with email is a benefit of having two screens on one computer.  For home businesses or individuals in corporate America, receiving tons of emails is common.  With two screens, someone could display all new emails coming in while the other can be used for other types of work.

The bottom line is that dual pc monitors have a number of advantages for home users or individuals in the marketplace.  While the pc speed would not increase, productivity would since the person is better equipped to stay better organized and multi task in a way like never before.  This direction has become so popular that it is becoming a normal part of buying a computer and screen.

Today, there are a number of pcs on the market that are engineered to support a dual computer screen without having to pay extra cash or time in getting hardware set up.  Consequently, if you have a newer pc, you might already have the capacity to work on two monitors on one computer.  To check, look at the back part of the pc where you would see two VGA connectors or DVI connectors, or in some cases, both.

If your computer is not engineered with a port for working on dual computer monitors, then you can go to a local pc or electronics store and purchase the needed hardware.  For this, sometimes the hardware is something you could install yourself but often times a professional's help is needed.

Classification of Computers

Computers are available in different shapes, sizes and weights, due to these different shapes and sizes they perform different sorts of jobs from one another.

They can also be classified in different ways. All the computers are designed by the qualified computer architectures that design these machines as their requirements.

Computer

A computer that is used in a home differs in size and shape from the computer being used in a hospital. Computers act as a server in large buildings, while the computer also differs in size and shape performing its job as a weather forecaster.

Classification of Computers

A student carrying a laptop with him to his college is different in shape and size from all the computers mentioned above.

Here we are going to introduce different classifications of computers one by one. We will discuss what are in classifications and what job they perform.

Super computer

The biggest in size, the most expensive in price than any other is classified and known as super computer. It can process trillions of instructions in seconds. This computer is not used as a PC in a home neither by a student in a college.

Governments specially use this type of computer for their different calculations and heavy jobs. Different industries also use this huge computer for designing their products.

In most of the Hollywood's movies it is used for animation purposes. This kind of computer is also helpful for forecasting weather reports worldwide.

Mainframes

Another giant in computers after the super computer is Mainframe, which can also process millions of instruction per second and capable of accessing billions of data.

This computer is commonly used in big hospitals, air line reservations companies, and many other huge companies prefer mainframe because of its capability of retrieving data on a huge basis.

This is normally to expensive and out of reach from a salary-based person who wants a computer for his home.

This kind of computer can cost up to thousands of dollars.

Minicomputer

This computer is next in he line but less offers less than mainframe in work and performance. These are the computers, which are mostly preferred by the small type of business personals, colleges, etc.

Personal computers

Almost all the computer users are familiar with the personal computers. They normally know what the personal computer is and what are its functions.

This is the computer mostly preferred by the home users. These computers are lesser in cost than the computers given above and also, small in size; they are also called PCs in short for Personal computers.

This computer is small in size and you can easily arrange it to fit in your single bedroom with its all accommodation. Today this is thought to be the most popular computer in all.

Notebook computers

Having a small size and low weight the notebook is easy to carry to anywhere. A student can take it with him/her to his/her school in his/her bag with his/her book.

This is easy to carry around and preferred by students and business people to meet their assignments and other necessary tasks.

The approach of this computer is also the same as the Personal computer. It can store the same amount of data and having a memory of the same size as that of a personal computer. One can say that it is the replacement of personal desktop computer.

Troubleshooting Computer Freeze (Lockup) Problems

How familiar does the following sound? Your computer was working fine, but then suddenly started locking up (aka hanging or freezing), rebooting itself (crashing) or shutting down spontaneously? If you know only too well what I am talking about, then read on! Performing the simple steps below can fix the majority of lockup cases.

1. Check for recently installed software or hardware.

Computer

If the lockups started to happen after you installed a new peace of hardware, new software program, or new drivers, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

Troubleshooting Computer Freeze (Lockup) Problems

2. Run your antivirus program.

One of the first things to do in the case of sudden lockups is to run your antivirus program. Check your antivirus manufacturer's website for updates and latest virus definition files. (This is absolutely necessary, outdated antivirus is not going to be of any use!) If you don't have antivirus software installed - or if updates are unavailable - run one of the web-based antivirus scans that some major antivirus vendors like Trend Micro are offering for free. You can find a comprehensive list of available web-based scans and free antivirus programs on http://www.free-antivirus.info.

3. Run some good spyware removal tool.

If your machine is not infected with any viruses, it is still possible that it has some harmful adware or spyware is present. Download and run some good spyware removal tool such as AdAware or Microsoft AntiSpyware. Check http://www.free-antivirus.info for a list of free spyware removal applications.

4. Check for free hard drive space.

When no viruses are found, check out free hard drive space on drive C:. Make sure there is more than 20% of free space available; low disk space can lead to random lockups.

5. Check for overheating.

Overheating is another known cause of lockups. It can be caused by problems with fans inside the case, dust buildup, or other cooling problems. Make sure the power supply fan and CPU fan are running and free of dust buildup. You can check the temperatures inside the case by running Motherboard monitor
http://mbm.livewiredev.com
- make sure the temperatures are within the preset limits. Be very careful while cleaning inside the computer case (use plastic vacuum crevice tool) and NEVER OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY CASE as it contains high voltage.

6. Check the hard disk.

Check the hard disk - it is possible that its logical structure is corrupted. To check the disk for errors, right-click on the disk C: icon in "My Computer", select the "Tools" tab, check all check boxes in the "Check disk options" field, and press the "Check now" button. It should ask whether you want to schedule the check next time you restart your computer - answer "Yes" and restart your PC. The check will be performed automatically after startup; it can take a while, so be patient. The program will attempt to fix some problems automatically - however, if the hard disk is failing physically, it will need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter (located in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to optimize data placement on the hard disk for increased performance and reliability.

7. Check the memory.

Sometimes random lockups can be attributed to the computer memory (RAM) starting to fail. You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM (pull it out and plug it back in). If it doesn't work, replace the defective RAM.

8. Check for other hardware problems (advanced users).

More hardware-related problems can be diagnosed by running hardware tests from the Ultimate Boot CD that can be downloaded from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used inappropriately (for example, some of them can wipe the contents of your hard disk).

9. Update Windows and drivers.

Some lockups can be caused by outdated software components - update your windows and drives by running a windows update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it's good idea to run it regularly).

The above steps will help diagnose and eliminate the most common causes of lockups. Hundreds more of other possible scenarios need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as it all goes down to your particular computer configuration. Asking on PC
troubleshooting forums/newsgroups
should help you figure out solutions to not-so-obvious lockup cases.

What is the Difference Between Firmware and Hardware?

Let us take a look at what 'Hardware' means when you talk about computers - almost all of the devices that you can find assembled into your computer come under the category of hardware. This includes the processor, the memory, the motherboard, the hard disks, the removable media drives (CD-ROM/DVD Reader/Writer, floppy drives, USB drives, the power supply, sound card, networking devices and Input/Output devices.

What makes all these hardware devices work together is the software that controls them. Software is the term given to programs that are usually run on computers. You may be familiar with and may have used many software packages - word processing software such as MS-Word and games are common examples. Software normally resides on the hard disk of the computer and is usually invoked by the operating system to perform specific tasks. It is usually coded in high-level languages like C or Java.

Hardware

Firmware is a term used for a specific type of software. Many processors (other than the CPU of your computer) require software to implement a functionality and this usually is programmed into some kind of Read-only Memory (ROM) on the device itself. This bundled or embedded software that controls a hardware device is called Firmware. Firmware is code that is meant for a particular hardware device and is usually in machine code (patterns of zeros and ones).

A good example would be that of surfing the Internet - you would use hardware in the form of a network card or a modem to connect to the Internet. The Operating System on your computer communicates with the network card or modem using software called device drivers. The processor around which the modem or the network card is built around would have its own firmware that controls the communication with the Internet and the host (computer).

Another good example of firmware in action is a cell phone, a washing machine or a microwave oven. Firmware is not usually meant to be reprogrammable, though in special cases like a cell phone, it may be so.

If you receive updates from the makers of devices like the CD-ROM drive in your computer that provide additional functionality or remove bugs, it is probably a firmware update and your OS would use the device drivers for that hardware to update the firmware.

Why Does My Computer Keep Freezing Up? - How to Fix Computer Freeze Problem

Does your computer keep freezing time and time again? Sometimes when you are working or playing games on your computer, your computer just freezes up for no reason. Why does the computer keep freezing? How do you fix it?

Normally a computer freezes up owing to short of RAM resources. When you are running too many programs at the same time, the programs will fight for the inadequate RAM resources. If Windows fails to allocate the memory properly, computer would freezes up and some programs will be not responding.

Computer

Someone says if he increases his memory the problem will not happen again. Unfortunately some PC users who have 4 G RAM also encounter the freezing problem once in a while. Why? System problems!

In most cases, it is not the inadequate RAM resources that cause computer to hang up. There are many issues that have a negative effect on computer performance such as registry errors, redundant DLL files, junk files and so on. When your computer is confronted with those problems, you could find the performance is dramatically decreased.

For example, registry is one of the most important parts of Windows system. If registry is corrupted or damaged, your computer would not only lock up but also even experience blue screen, blank screen and other serious problems. And when there are many redundant DLL files in your system disk, part of the RAM resources will be occupied by them. Then your PC will run into the situation in which RAM resources is inadequate and your computer will hang up.

Besides, there are many other issues can lead to computer hang-up. You need to handle all the issues to fix the problem.

Understanding Different Kinds of Computer Hardware

Different kinds of hardware have their different levels of importance, but before we delve into the types we need to first look at the term itself and understand what it means. Computer hardware simply put is the physical component of the computer. For you to be able to be reading this right now means that your computer has the physical components required for the software or programmes to work.

We will discuss briefly some of the different kinds of hardware that you will most commonly encounter such as:

Hardware

o The Circuit Board or Mother Board: This is where the main processor of your computer is located and it is on this component that most other hardware feed off.

o The Hard drive: This is your computer store house, so in other words this is where the data that helps your computer to function properly are kept. Data that you generate as you use your computer are also stored here.

o The Cd/Dvd Drive: This is also another kind of storage facility that supports a different kind of data and storage type.

o The Cooling fan: This is often times located on the top of your mother board/circuit board, and just as the name suggests serves as a coolant. When your computer is on it generates heat just like the engine of your car and it is this cooling fan that is tasked with making sure the computer does not get over heated.

o The Memory Chip: This is yet again another part of your computer brain that handles information stores information needed for the proper functioning of your computer. This also supports the general speed of your computer...so a small memory means a slow computer.

o Keyboard & Mouse: This is the component of your computer that helps you with the input of data (such as typing) and navigation. So in other words this is the means for communicating with your computer.

Listed above are some of the different kinds of hardware that you are likely to encounter more often, but there are lots of other hardware that might not be directly a part of your computer but is used along side your computer and attached by means of an external source. So if you do not have proper computer hardware you will naturally find it impossible to install software or run a program on your computer.

Optimum performance of your computer is dependent on the type of hardware you are using. These different kinds of hardware affect affects the computer in diverse ways, but the circuit board has the most influence on the speed of your computer...why? Because like I mentioned earlier the other components mostly feed off the circuit board so if the circuit is rubbish there is a tendency for your computer output to be rubbish.

Most computer hardware can be upgraded as individual components, which means if for instance you notice that your storage space is getting smaller you can purchase an extra hard drive to back up the first one or you can completely change the hard drive for another.

Sixth Generation of Computers

Technology advancements are often quantified and identified by the terminology "generation." Each year, the product development process improves, this is deemed a generation. With each new generation of computer, the motherboard and silicon footprint decreases and the speed, power and memory power increases.

Progression of Computers

Computers

Computers have come a long way since the first generation vacuum tubes for circuitry and memory magnetic drums. The first generation computer utilized assembly language programming or high level programming languages to execute instructions for the user. These early computers required a lot of electricity to operate and also generated a lot of heat that was difficult to displace.

The second generation replaced the vacuum tubes with transistors, which were a primary component of microprocessors today. Transistors were invented in 1947 in Bell Laboratories. These devices were preferable to vacuum tubes that emitted a significant amount of heat and slowed processing times.

Transistors opened the door to faster processing. The latest microprocessors contain tens of millions of microscopic transistors. Without the transistor, we would not have the same level of computing power that we have today.

The transistor was invented in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computers until the late 50s. The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube. This allowed computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first-generation predecessors.

The third generation computer involved integrated circuits. These circuits are often referred to as semiconductors, because of the substrate used to design the circuit. Semiconductors dramatically increased the speed and efficiency of the computer. Semiconductors also decreased the overall footprint of the computer. As the semiconductor packages become smaller, designers produced smaller laptops and desktop computers. Minimalist designers and chiropractors rejoiced with the weight and size reduction.

The fourth generation marked the production of computers as we know them today. Microprocessors were introduced in this generation of computers. The computer processing speeds increased exponentially, as the "brain" of the computer mastered complex computations. This generation of computer allowed manufacturers to lower the price to make computers available to the common household. Computers, however, were still not as cost effective as they are today.

The fifth generation of computer added artificial intelligence to the computer to improve the speed and efficiency of advanced computations and graphic displays. Game playing, expert systems, natural language, neural networks and robotics were all capabilities of the fifth generation computer.

Neural networks were particularly important in this generation of computer. The computer could mimic actual neuron synapses in the human body. These complex mathematical models were handled with ease through the fifth generation computer. However, scientists still needed more computing power to accomplish advanced robotics and other language computations.

The Sixth Generation of Computer

Not only does the technology improve, but the price decreases as the technology improves. The sixth generation of computer provided consumers with the opportunity to have more power on a smaller footprint. The sixth generation also introduced voice recognition. Improved technology allows the computer to take dictation and recognize words. Computers have the ability to learn via a variety of advanced algorithms.

The use of nanotechnology is a characteristic of sixth generation computers. This significantly increases the processing time of the computer and help consumers. Computers with multiple CPUs can perform sophisticated calculations and multitask. When a single CPU can perform multiple tasks at once, this is considered multi-tasking.

When qubits or quantum bits process calculations, it is typically faster than conventional computers. This technology works in conjunction with the computer's processor and memory. Complex languages such as English, Chinese, French and Spanish are easily processed with the use of qubits or quantum bits. Computers can now understand and interpret numerous languages with the new advanced technology available.

This new advancement will allow students and the disabled to speak commands into the computer without touching the physical device. Voice recognition is also helpful in laboratory clean rooms, surgical operating rooms or even use in customer service. Voice recognition will significantly enhance the scientist's ability to create new technology.

Voice controlled games and typing applications are easy with sixth generation applications. Avid gamers will view video games in incredible detail with life-like motion. Parallel processing enables faster speeds for video games. As the semiconductor footprint becomes smaller through the use of nanotechnology, the user has more flexibility in the use of the computer.

Conclusion

Sixth generation took advanced computing to a new level with voice recognition. Consumers can only imagine what the seventh generation of computer will bring. Consumers will look forward to these new advancements as they develop.

The Microsoft Xbox 360 is one of the latest inventions of video games. Video game lovers everywhere are rejoicing the arrival of the new system. The newest Xbox is still a gamer's dream, but it is also being marketed as a media center. Not only can the system be used for playing video games, but it can also be used to play DVDs, CDs and MP3s. Apple iMac (27-inch) Vs HP Touch Smart IQ816 Desktop PC (25.5-inch)

The Apple iMac (27-inch) is the apple many people would become sinners for. It is the all-in-one desktop that brought about a revolution among computers, and no matter how many similar computers were released before, iMac is the only one that has been able to match style and performance, and incorporate both into one body.

On the other hand the HP Touch Smart looks good at first glance, but can we really compare it to the iMac? Let us start with its touch screen, which is probably the best on the market. But is it everything to have a touch screen? We do admit that it is interesting playing with it, but let us go a bit further. The HP Touch Smart really does look like a capable enough, all-in-one; however, in comparison with similar computers on the market, it loses its credibility. For general entertainment we recommend the iMac. Keep reading to learn what we discovered when exploring these two computers a bit more.

Desktop

The iMac features definitely worth mentioning are the new multi-touch wireless mouse and a slim, wireless keyboard. However, the third, and the most important part of this Apple trilogy is the LED-backlit screen with 2.560x1.440 pixel native resolution, which gives you the feeling of actually being on the movie set while it was being made! Any desktop computer display in comparison with the iMac's is in our book, in one word - incomparable! You would need to have at least a 30-inch monitor in order to enjoy watching movies as close as you could do it with the iMac, which leads us to the additional ,000 or more you will pay. One more fact, concerning the screen, which might catch your attention, is Apple's claim that the iMac's LCD has a 178-degree viewing angle. In layman's terms, well sort of, the iMac's resolution is 2.560 X 1.440, whereas the HP Touch Screen's is "only" 1.920 X 1.200.

Compared to the iMac's 178-degree viewing, another weakness we found in the HP design is that the hi-def screen looks promising, however, be sure of the viewing angle because you might see strange images and dark spots in places you should not. Another minus, especially for movie lovers, is that you cannot use the touch screen to select the Blu-ray features of the movie you are currently watching. So, what do you have to do? Well, you have to tap a virtualized remote to move between selections. And all high tech junkies know, no matter how cool it is at first, every toy gets boring after a while.

As for built-in devices you can find a camera, antenna, stereo speakers, and infrared receiver, however, we will say this even before a question mark pops up above your head: there is no Blu-ray. With Blu-ray being so hot right now, we were surprised they did not actually give us that ultimate and complete pleasure when we are watching movies on the computer. The iMac also does not have a TV tuner, but who cares, with all the other features this Apple has, we assure you that the only worm it could have is because some evil minds on the Internet send you virus or get your credit card number.

There was actually one more thing that we saw as not so practical - the camera. Since it is built-in, you can say bye-bye to showing off your new apartment to your cousin far-far-away. It does not mean that you cannot do it, we are just saying - go for an easier option and film it with your own camera. The HP Touch Smart on the other hand, besides the basic built-ins, has Blu-Ray, S-video output, and a standard cable coaxial input for the included TV tuner. So, after pressing only a few buttons, IQ816 transforms into an HD-ready television. The keyboard, though it is slim and sleek, offer no additional functions, except for the volume-control buttons which allow you the mute and sleep options. It looks like they thought of everything, because we know for a fact that many people have the tendency of falling asleep in front of their computers, while watching movies at home, of course.

Concerning processors, the iMac comes with 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and the HP TouchSmart with 2.100GHz Core 2 Duo T8100. The memory does not differ much as they both come with 4GB installed memory that can be upgraded. When it comes to graphics, the iMac has ATI Radeon HD 4670 (256MB), and the HP Nvidia GeForce 9600M FS. So, all in all, it depends which technical features you prefer to have.

And now, let's talk about the warranty. Both of them, the HP Touch Smart and the iMac, have a limited warranty of 1 year and complimentary telephone technical support of 90 days on the iMac. Curious about the prices? Well, the HP will cost you around , 000, and the iMac around ,700.

After comparing these two computers, what more can we say except that when you are looking for a new computer, you should remember the advice your grandma gave you - fruit is good for you!
